Why does my window no longer open?

You should know that when a window gets stuck, squeaks or hangs, it can be due to several factors. Some are totally inherent to the operation of the window. The others are exterior. In fact, they depend on various factors such as bad weather, heat or the material used for the window. We take stock of the different causes that can prevent your window from opening…

The first thing to check is that your window handle is working normally. For this, you must pay attention to the signs. If the handle strains when you move it or it gets stuck in the open or closed position, the problem is with it. If it comes with a lock, it will also be necessary to check that the problem does not come from the lock. In this case, you must check with your key if you can operate the mechanism.

Next, you need to look at the material your window is made of. If you have a PVC window, chances are your window is jammed because of the PVC. Indeed, this material tends to twist and deform over time. It will therefore be necessary to make the appropriate adjustments to solve the problem.

If your window is made of wood, it is surely the material that played a role. Indeed, the wood expands under the effect of heat which prevents the opening or on the contrary retracts with the cold. In either case, this can have effects on opening, closing… in short… maneuvers in general.

What should I do when my window no longer opens?

As you can understand, the action taken to unblock a window depends on the source of the blocking. Indeed, depending on the source of the problem, you will not act in the same way. So here’s what to do depending on the situation:

If your window is made of wood: the wood may have swollen. In this case, it is enough to plan it a little so that the window does not stick any more. However, be careful not to have your hand too heavy so that it is not then too small for the carpentry.
If your window is made of PVC: all you have to do is move the hinges to restore the window to normal operating condition. To do this, you simply have to play with the window settings.
If the problem comes from the handle: you must first disassemble the mechanism to see which part is preventing normal operation. Once this is done, you just need to check each item. The lock, the cylinder or the striker may be the cause. Once this is done, all you have to do is make the necessary repair. If necessary, you can ask a professional locksmith to intervene to carry out a lock repair or even a complete change.

Different interventions are possible. If you’re not a handyman, I suggest you call a locksmith before it gets mishandled and makes the situation worse.
