How to change the window handle?

Over time, window handles in your bedroom, living room, or bathroom will eventually break from handling, opening, and closing. You will need to change it.

Just installed in your new home, the window handles do not match your decorative tastes. You have decided to replace them with more modern models.

Remove the old handle

Removing a window handle is a relatively simple operation that any DIYer can do. You can choose to install the window on the hinges or disassemble the sash and install it on the brackets.

First, place the handle in a horizontal position. To do this, simply turn it to the right as you would to open it. Then, depending on its design, two options might come to mind.

-The screws are visible
In this case, the next step is to unscrew them using your favorite tool, screwdriver or electric screwdriver.

-The screws are hidden by screw covers in the form of a plastic tab

Rotate it, don’t force it around the axis of the handle. This will reveal the screws directly below and you can remove them.

You can now remove the handle from its case. All you have to do is remove the square axis passing through the window, a little penetrating oil will help you if necessary.

The case of the broken handle

When the handle is damaged, it is generally necessary to replace the entire locking system as well as the cremone bolts.

To do this, check the window frame, find the screws holding the cremone box and remove them. Then remove the window handle and separate the casement extension and rod from the same sash. At this point, you can completely remove the defective cremone bolt. In some cases, the use of a flat tool is essential to exploit and extract it more easily.

The last step is to install and secure the new handle. If necessary, if the previous plate left traces, polish the wood or clean the PVC of your window then:

-Insert the axis of the new handle or reuse the old one if the size corresponds
-Fit the handle
-Place it facing the holes left by the screws
-Tighten the screws and check the fixing for a few days after installation
-Finally, check that the assembly works correctly by operating the handle and replace your window trim, if it has one.
